Anxiety Therapy

Is It Normal Anxiety or an Anxiety Disorder?

Some level of anxiety is a natural part of the human experience (annoying, but true). But when anxiety starts to feel overwhelming—when you begin slipping into hopelessness, spiraling thoughts, or a loss of control—and especially when it starts interfering with your daily life, it’s time to seek support from a professional anxiety therapist in Los Angeles.
Scientifically speaking, anxiety is your body’s built-in response to stress.
Feeling nervous the night before a big meeting, worrying before a public speech, or feeling butterflies before a first date—those are universal experiences.
But when anxiety stops feeling situational and starts feeling constant, “too much,” or impossible to manage, it can develop into a very real medical condition known as an anxiety disorder.
If you suspect you may be dealing with an anxiety disorder, here are some of the common signs and symptoms you should pay attention to.
We’ll also share details on specific types of anxiety disorders below.
Note: Only a licensed mental health professional can diagnose anxiety disorders. If you’d like to speak with a trained expert and get matched with the right therapist, you can book a free call below.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Restlessness, irritability, or feeling constantly “on edge”
  • Racing thoughts, rumination, or obsessive thinking
  • Feeling tired, drained, or physically weak
  • Muscle tension or tightness
  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Physical symptoms (chest tightness, heart palpitations, stomach distress)
  • Sweating, shaking, or trembling
  • Excessive, uncontrollable worrying

But GAD isn’t the only form of anxiety. Anxiety can also show up as panic disorder, illness anxiety (hypochondria), OCD, and other stress-response disorders.

Panic Disorder

When Panic Attacks Take Over

Panic Disorder involves recurring episodes of sudden, intense fear that trigger severe physical symptoms—even when there is no real danger.
Panic attacks can be so intense they mimic the symptoms of a heart attack (terrifying, we know).
While some people experience relief when stressors fade, panic attacks often indicate deeper unresolved issues that need professional support.
If panic attacks are happening repeatedly—or if you fear having another one—it’s important to reach out for help.
Symptoms of generalized anxiety can include:
  • A sense of imminent danger or doom
  • Hot flashes or chills
  • Nausea or stomach pain
  • Excessive sweating
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rapid or pounding heartbeat
  • Feeling detached from reality or “unreal”

Illness Anxiety Disorder

When Health Anxiety Takes Over
What was once called “Hypochondria” is now known as Illness Anxiety Disorder. Someone with this condition becomes excessively concerned they have a serious medical illness—even with no medical evidence to support it.
Symptoms of panic attacks can include:
  • Persistent fear of having a life-threatening illness
  • Extreme anxiety about your physical or mental health
  • Constant checking of your body for symptoms
  • Avoiding doctors—or changing doctors frequently
  • Excessive Googling (a.k.a. cyberchondria)
  • Being unconvinced you’re healthy despite clear medical reassurance
Illness Anxiety Disorder often develops after major stress, childhood trauma, or the loss of a loved one to illness. With the right therapeutic approach, healing is absolutely possible.

Anxiety and Eating Disorders

How Anxiety Fuels Eating Disorders

Many people don’t realize that conditions such as anorexia and bulimia are categorized as anxiety-related disorders.
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia involves a distorted self-image in which you perceive yourself as overweight—even when you’re underweight. Symptoms include:
  • Restricting food intake
  • Obsessive weighing or body-checking
  • Purging behaviors
  • Intense fear of gaining weight
This disorder can be extremely dangerous and requires immediate professional support.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia is characterized by cycles of binge eating followed by:
  • Forced vomiting
  • Laxative use
  • Fasting
  • Over-exercising
These patterns can lead to severe physical and emotional consequences, including dehydration, gastrointestinal damage, electrolyte imbalances, and throat problems.
If you suspect you may be experiencing either of these disorders, please reach out for help.

I am blown away! I don’t write testimonials, unless I have been extremely moved by something. I was blessed to work with Brooke on a single session, and before this I was in therapy on and off with multiple therapists for the last 20 years of my life. Brooke was able to do more in one session than many years of work with my previous therapist. She has the true gift of great insight and compassion while also getting straight to the heart of your blind spots and unconscious issues in a way that has truly changed my life.

There are people who are good at their work there are people like Brooke: who are born to do it. I cannot recommend Brooke more highly. I can only imagine where I would be today if I had started working with her years ago. From the beginning of our session, she knew exactly what tools and questions that would work for my particular psychology and my personal experience. No other therapist has been able to do that or anything close.

What I also really appreciate from our session is Brookes ability to go directly to the source of the issue while also keeping a very gentle and kind energy with me. I felt very seen, understood, and supported. Everything and more that I could have ever asked for from a therapist. I have a severe trauma history and complex issues she was able to immediately identify and help. If she could help me, I know she can help you too.

After every session I come away feeling better prepared to start shining light into shadows I've hustled past for a long, long time... some rational ones, but a lot more aren't. Shame is such a stealthy master; He's been the monkey on my back for a long time. You totally called it. I'm so grateful for your guidance and skill and although sometimes I may shuffle and others I may leap, after our sessions I always feel like I'm moving forward.

With your help, I've finally started to understand that while my vivid imagination often wants to create terrifying monsters under the bed, in a lot of cases those monsters are nothing more than a heap of decidedly less-terrifying laundry I've avoided for too long that just needs to be aired out and put away. Which is definitely a lot easier than monster slaying. Thank you for shedding light in the dark places I was too afraid to face alone.

I want to thank you again for your continued help and expertise, and more specifically for yesterday's learning opportunity about how I can communicate more effectively. After your ultimately appreciated prodding you made me feel comfortable with the idea that expressing confusion or even doubt can serve as valuable conversation-assets, and I look forward to moving forward without those those self-inflicted parameters.

Just wanted to share that yesterday's session with you, and a long, productive dinner table conversation with my wife last night, started to uncover a huge gap between perception and reality in my understanding of the status I held in our marriage. Our session opened my eyes to the fact that the inequity I've long felt comes from a place of assumed unworthiness. I'm so thankful for this journey we are taking together, with your help, towards deeper, more productive understanding.

I’ve recommended Brooke to so many of my friends and colleagues, I’m starting to feel like her personal cheerleader. But it can’t be helped. When I look back on the past year, without a doubt the most difficult year of my life, I can’t believe how far I’ve come.
