Educational Consulting

Your child or teen’s school is where they spend a large portion of their formative years, which means it plays a significant role in shaping them as people.

That’s why choosing the right school for your child is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Some common questions and concerns parents have when choosing a school are:

Is my child’s school a good fit for his/her learning and emotional needs?

Does my child feel out of place in academic or social situations?

Does my child need more support in order to reach their highest potential?

Parents have a lot of choices when it comes to education, but may need additional assistance when deciding what’s the best fit for their child.

We will be happy to assist you in finding the right academic environment, the right social help, and the best extracurriculars for your kid.

It’s helpful to have an educational consult that’s independent from your school district in order to prevent ethical conflicts.

While the service is called educational consulting, we also provide different forms of therapy that can address other aspects of your child’s mental and emotional health.

If your child or teen is unhappy or frequently stressed at school, it’s important to explore the underlying problems and possible solutions. Some common issues may be due to learning disabilities, autism spectrum conditions, bullying, or ADHD.

Learning Disabilities

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can cause your child or teen to struggle more than their peers.

They may have difficulty with reading, writing, and/or math, and may work at a slower pace than other children.

Learning disabilities need to be diagnosed so that modifications and/or tutoring can be implemented.

Ideally, an earlier diagnosis is better to prevent additional mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety.

It’s important to recognize that your child is not defined by their disability, they simply need access to different resources in order to succeed.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD)

A child with undiagnosed ADHD will have a much more difficult time succeeding academically.

ADHD can negatively affect achievement, learning, focus, and can also cause behavioral problems, which may have social ramifications among their peers as well.

ADHD is neurologically and developmentally based, which means it responds well to treatment.

Cognitive and behavioral techniques can be effective for ADHD, and some people choose to use medication if their child’s symptoms are severe enough. We are here to educate you on different options and will support whatever path you choose to take, one way or another, depending on your values and needs.

Without treatment, your child may have a hard time focusing in school, which can lead to additional illnesses such as depression or anxiety.

Children and Teens on the Spectrum

Children “on the spectrum” have a mild form of autism, which can cause difficulty with social communication and establishing relationships with peers.

It’s important to realize that it’s called a “spectrum” because there are varying degrees of the condition.

Some kids with autism perform—or even outperform—their peers, while others may struggle more academically.

Autism is still pretty misunderstood and may make life more difficult for your child.

That’s why it’s crucial to provide professional support so that they can reach their full potential.

We are here to explore the possible benefits of changing schools, tutoring, counseling, or special educational services.

We will also provide therapy that best suits your child’s needs so that he/she can have the best educational experience and form long lasting connections with peers.

Bullying

Each school has a unique social culture, and some children and teens are targeted because they diverge from the “norm.”

Being bullied or feeling like you don’t belong can cause emotional problems like depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Our therapists can help your child or teen learn empowered ways to help them deal with bullying and can help you—the parent—assess if changing schools is a good option.

Going through your child’s school years may seem daunting, especially if you don’t have enough resources or people around you for social support.

Educational consulting can be an important investment for your child’s future.

These are big decisions to make alone, and we at My LA Therapy are here and are readily equipped to help you navigate this challenging time.
