WHAT DEPRESSION SOUNDS LIKE

Everything feels harder than it used to.

"I wake up already tired, and the day hasn’t even started."
"I understand exactly why I’m depressed. It doesn’t lift."
“I sleep nine hours and wake up like I never slept at all.”
“I go through the motions of my day and feel almost nothing.”
“Things that used to light me up just… don’t anymore.”
“I keep telling myself to snap out of it. It doesn’t work that way.”

If you're nodding, that's exactly where we begin.

Research-based therapy for depression

Depression isn’t just a sad mood. It’s a nervous system in need of support.

While sadness is a normal part of life, when it comes with hopelessness, worthlessness, or numbness, it requires professional treatment.

Depression affects how we think, feel, and behave, which can cause a whole host of emotional and physical problems — and its effects rarely stop with you. Feeling sad, disconnected, or apathetic takes a toll on your relationships too. Depression can also bring on intense emotions like emptiness, irrational guilt, preoccupation with death, thoughts of suicide, and unhealthy dependence on others.

These are signs that your nervous system needs support to shift the underlying emotional and cognitive patterns causing your depression. Below are a few of the most common signs of depression:

The good news

Depression is remarkably responsive to treatment.

We use research-based therapy approaches that are scientifically proven to treat every kind of depression including:

major depressionbipolar disorderPMDDno joy in anythingpostpartum depression
Lethargy & fatigue
Loss of interest
Hopelessness
Sleep changes
Worthlessness or guilt
HOW DEPRESSION SHOWS UP IN YOUR LIFE

Depression rarely announces itself. It shows up in small ways first.

Joy goes quiet

A situation that used to bring you joy is happening — and you notice you no longer feel as relaxed or excited as you used to.

Apathy that won’t lift

A sense of apathy that never seems to go away, no matter how the day goes.

Agitation in familiar places

Increased anxiety and agitation that make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in situations that used to feel normal — even enjoyable.

You may also start to entertain the idea of suicide. Whether you are actually considering going through with it or just thinking about it (known as suicidal ideation), please reach out to a professional or call 911 immediately. Suicide is a permanent way to avoid a temporary problem — one we can help you work through.

DEPRESSION AND MOOD DISORDERS WE TREAT

Low mood wears more than one face.

Our team of experienced therapists specialize in a wide range of depression and mood disorders, which can stem from trauma, learned behavior, negative thought patterns, and biochemistry — or some combination of all of the above. Below are the ones we treat most, and their telltale signs and symptoms:

Woman sitting with her face buried in both hands against a grey wall — major depressive disorder and clinical depression therapy in Los Angeles

  • – Loss of interest, lack of pleasure, anhedonia
  • – Significant sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness
  • – Insomnia, or sleeping far more than usual

Black and white close-up of hands clenched in hair — bipolar disorder therapy in Los Angeles

Bipolar Disorder

A mood disorder of alternating depressive and elevated episodes — not moods that shift by the hour.

  • ✓ Depressive episodes that look like major depression
  • ✓ Periods of elevated, expansive, or irritable mood
  • ✓ Needing far less sleep without feeling tired
  • ✓ Racing thoughts, rapid speech, ideas piling up
  • ✓ Impulsive spending, risk-taking, or sudden big decisions
Woman sitting with her arms wrapped around herself in striped window light — premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) therapy in Los Angeles

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

A severe, cyclical mood disorder tied to the weeks before your period — far beyond ordinary PMS.

  • Severe mood shifts in the week or two before your period
  • Irritability or anger that feels out of character
  • Hopelessness and self-critical spirals
  • Anxiety, tension, or feeling permanently on edge
  • Symptoms lifting within a few days of bleeding starting
  • A monthly pattern dismissed for years as “just PMS”
Mother holding her newborn in a dim room, face turned toward the baby — postpartum depression therapy in Los Angeles

Postpartum Depression

Depression that occurs after childbirth, well past the short-lived baby blues.

  • + Persistent sadness, emptiness, or numbness
  • + Difficulty bonding with your baby
  • + Overwhelming fatigue beyond ordinary sleep loss
  • + Guilt, or feeling like a bad parent
  • + Anxiety, agitation, or intrusive fears
  • + Thoughts of harming yourself

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself in any way, please reach out for help right now — call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. Suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem that we can help you work through.

DEPRESSION IN THE MIND AND BODY

Depression isn't just in your head. It lives in your body.

Depression doesn't only manifest in the mind — it shows up in the body as well, and research keeps finding more evidence that gut health, immune health, and mental health are tied together in a self-reinforcing feedback loop (see our functional nutrition & holistic therapy research). In other words, our physical and emotional lives interact bidirectionally and reinforce one another.

When we feel our best, we are more likely to eat well, exercise consistently, be productive, and have the kind of positive interactions that build new friendships and relationships. When we're depressed, the opposite happens: work, social engagements, and exercise fly out the window. The less we take care of ourselves, the worse we feel — and the worse we feel, the less we take care of ourselves. That vicious cycle is hard to break out of alone, which is why our proprietary Nervous System-Based Therapy works on every channel below, not just the thoughts:

Mood and thinking

Cognitive-Emotional Depression

  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making everyday decisions
  • Memory problems
  • Irrational guilt and relentless self-blame
  • Preoccupation with death, or thoughts of suicide
  • Apathy that never seems to go away
The body

Physical Depression

  • Insomnia, or hypersomnia and sleeping too much
  • Body fatigue, heaviness, and loss of energy
  • Weight fluctuation and appetite change
  • Constricted blood vessels and increased risk of heart attack
  • A weakened immune system
The feedback loop

The Self-Reinforcing Cycle

  • The less we take care of ourselves, the worse we feel
  • Work, social engagements, and exercise fly out the window
  • Gut health, immune health, and mental health reinforce each other
  • Self-esteem and self-worth erode as the cycle repeats
  • A vicious cycle that is hard to break alone
DEPRESSION, SELF-WORTH, AND SELF-ESTEEM

Depression chips away at your sense of worth.

What makes the cycle even harder is that depression consequently erodes our self-esteem and self-worth. So whether you are simply going through a rough time or you're fully in the throes of depression, therapy can help you identify the underlying patterns and implement strategies to restore a sense of joy, peace, and competence to your life.

Our methods are scientifically backed and research-proven to be effective for treating depression, anxiety, and a whole host of other mental health issues.

Our founder’s signature approach

Nervous System-Based Therapy.

The original framework our founder developed over twenty years in practice, and the backbone of how we treat depression: working with the system that has gone quiet, not just the thoughts it produces.

✓Developed by our founder Brooke Sprowl, LCSW
01

Physiological calibration

Real-time nervous system regulation and autonomic tracking, as it’s happening, lets us read what your system is doing in the room — the flatness, the shutdown, the bracing underneath it — and work with it as it happens.

02

Defense system mapping

Depression is often what remains when defenses that once kept us safe keep running long past their usefulness, flattening feeling along with pain. We identify and compassionately interrupt these defense mechanisms to break the cycle.

03

Multi-modal processing

Depression travels different pathways in different people — through thinking, mood, the body, sleep, and appetite. We work somatically, experientially, cognitively, and with parts, understanding that each pathway requires different interventions.

A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER

Depression narrows your world.
Therapy widens it again.

I spent more than 10 years seeking help for my own mental health with over a dozen different therapists. I know this territory so deeply because I've lived it personally. I know what it feels like to wake up with no reason to get out of bed, to move through a whole day feeling almost nothing, and to be told to look on the bright side by people who love you.

You are not weak, and you are not too much. Depression tends to settle on brilliant, capable, deeply feeling people. In twenty years of practice, my clients are some of the most extraordinary people I've ever met.

Depression lifts as you learn to work with the nervous system rather than against it, discerning the cues your body is sending you to slow down, pay attention, and tend to your own needs. In this way, you restore your capacity to trust yourself, repattern your nervous system, and reconnect with a sense of peace and aliveness

Mastering Irrational Thoughts

Think of this guide like a workout for your well-being.

The more you practice, the better your mental endurance and fitness will be. Practice often to create greater resiliency, self-esteem, and courage.

Often our anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem are triggered by Thought Distortions that reinforce our deepest fears about ourselves, others, and our future.

We tend to unquestioningly accept these Thought Distortions as true when we leave them unchecked and do not examine them more deeply.

With a deeper investigation of our Thought Distortions, we may discover important truths about ourselves and how these knee-jerk, reactive thoughts contribute to our negative, Self-Limiting Core Beliefs and narratives.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a research-proven technique that can help transform depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem and help us see ourselves and the world in more empowering, balanced, and realistic ways.

CBT takes the scientific method and uses it to kick Distorted Thoughts to the curb so we can become more confident, peaceful, and hopeful.

This is the beginning of creating the life you've always wanted and becoming the person you've always wanted to be.

FAQS ABOUT DEPRESSION THERAPY

Before you reach out.

Still deciding? The free 30-minute consult matching call exists for exactly this — no charge, no commitment.

How is this different from just talking about my depression?

Talking builds understanding, and understanding alone rarely lifts depression. Our therapists work with what your body is doing in the moment — so the change registers beyond the cognitive level of insight, where depression actually lives.

I’ve tried therapy for depression before and it didn’t work. Why would this be different?

Usually because the fit was wrong or the approach stopped at insight alone. We hand-select your therapist for your specific depression rather than handing you a directory, and if you don’t love your match, you can tell us and we’ll make it right.

Do you treat bipolar disorder, PMDD, and postpartum depression?

Yes. Major depression, bipolar disorder, PMDD, and postpartum depression are all part of this specialty, and they call for genuinely different clinical skill sets — bipolar and PMDD especially. That’s why the match matters as much as the method.

How long does depression therapy take?

Most people feel a shift in the first several weeks and do meaningful work over a few months. Your therapist will be candid with you about what your situation likely calls for.

Do you offer online depression therapy?

Yes. You can meet online across California, or in person at any of our LA offices. Many clients mix the two, and for depression specifically, being able to keep the session on the days when leaving the house feels like too much matters more than the room.

How do you decide which therapist I see?

You tell us what’s going on, and we hand-select from our small, boutique roster. Every therapist on it is personally vetted and trained by our founder. We weigh your unique needs, personality, and values against each therapist’s specialties and style, and we factor in the practical pieces too, like which of our locations are convenient for you and when you’re free to meet. It’s a human judgment call, not an algorithm.
