Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Therapy

ADD/ADHD is a term so loosely thrown around these days that it has become watered down.

But, it’s important to realize that this condition is a challenging, lifelong battle that deserves attention and understanding.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that starts when we’re kids and continues into adulthood.

It is far-reaching, affecting about 5-11% of American children.

ADHD includes a combination of problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior.

Children with ADHD may also struggle with troubled relationships, poor performance in school, and low self-esteem.

It’s not surprising that low-self esteem is such a common symptom across the board because kids with ADHD often feel that they are different.

They even sometimes perceive themselves as low achievers due to parents and teachers treating them differently from other children.

While symptoms sometimes lessen with age, some people never completely grow out of it.

That’s where we come in.

We work with both children and adults to help manage ADHD so it’s no longer ruling their lives.

Our trained therapists have plenty of strategies in their toolbox that can help you or your child lead a successful and functional life.

While children may have difficulties in school, adults with ADHD have a different set of problems.

Think difficulties with staying organized and meeting deadlines.

Adults with ADHD are often stereotyped as being restless or lazy, but it’s very important for them to realize that these habits are a result of their condition, and not who they truly are.

Here are some symptoms you may relate to if you’re an adult suffering with ADD/ADHD:

  • Behavioral issues such as hyperactivity, fidgeting, impulsivity, irritability, risk taking behaviors, or lack of restraint
  • Cognitive issues such as difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, problems paying attention, racing thoughts, or a short attention span
  • Mood issues such as anxiety, boredom, excitement, or mood swings
  • Other common issues include depression, learning disabilities, or sleep deprivation

ADHD Treatment

Therapy and medication are two mainstream approaches to treat ADHD.

Increasing research is also showing that supplements and nutrition may also improve ADHD symptoms. (See our Holistic Therapy and Functional Nutrition page for more info.)

You can also choose a combination of different approaches for a more holistic treatment plan.

ADHD medication includes some names you’ve probably heard of, like Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, and Dexedrine.

The most widely used medications include stimulants that can help you focus your thoughts and ignore distractions with increased dopamine and norepinephrine levels.

There are also non-stimulants that help improve symptoms like concentration and impulse control.

Some may also turn to antidepressants to treat comorbid illnesses, like depression and anxiety.

Research-based, personalized therapy.

At My LA Therapy, our warm and experienced therapists specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, & relationships.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ADHD

When it comes to using therapy to treat ADHD, we utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to focus on emotional control and problem-solving.

What is CBT exactly?

It’s a highly-successful technique that targets the negative beliefs that prevent you from accepting your current reality.

Once you identify your negative beliefs, you can challenge them with more rational responses.

Eventually these new thought patterns will become second nature, and you will be able to move through life with more confidence and peace.

We also focus on behavioral interventions for ADHD such as learning how to create structure and habits that improve organization and performance.

Whether it’s CBT, talk therapy, or a different modality, you’ll walk away with stronger time management skills, organizational skills, and a better handle on processing emotions and establishing healthy coping patterns.

Psychotherapy is also beneficial in supporting clients who experience problems beyond the classic symptoms of ADHD, such as social skills, academics/work, interpersonal and/or workplace relationships, oppositional behavior, anxiety, and depression.

Our therapists will help you build your self-esteem through self-awareness and compassion.

If you choose to incorporate medication into your treatment, psychotherapy can help you through the emotional and physical changes you may experience.

Regardless of how much ADHD has affected you or your child, our trained therapists are here to help you navigate the best treatment for your individual needs.

From referrals to medication management to psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we’ll walk you through it every step of the way.
