Emotionally Focused Therapy — commonly referred to as EFT — is a research-based, experiential approach to psychotherapy that helps individuals, couples, and families strengthen emotional bonds and resolve distressing patterns of interaction. EFT works with your emotional system — the ways you experience, express, and regulate emotions — to create deeper connection, safety, and stability in your relationships and within yourself.
When people experience unresolved emotional patterns — such as fear of abandonment, chronic conflict, attachment insecurity, or deep emotional pain — it can show up as anxiety, depression, relationship distress, withdrawal, or reactivity. EFT helps you identify and reprocess these emotional responses at their core so lasting change can happen.
We’re so confident in our extraordinary therapists that we guarantee you’ll love your match – or your money back.
We find you the perfect therapist – or your money back.
EFT stands out from other therapeutic approaches because it doesn’t emphasize quick symptom relief or surface-level communication tricks. Instead, it tunes into the deeper emotional experience — the feelings that give rise to what we do and why we do it. EFT therapists are trained to notice emotions as they unfold in the moment and to help clients stay with those emotions in a safe, structured environment. This experiential approach allows people to feel deeply heard and understood while also learning how to use emotion as a guide, not an obstacle.
Unlike therapy that primarily targets thoughts or behaviors, EFT sees emotional experience as central. In practice, this means creating what attachment science calls a “secure base” — a sense of emotional safety from which exploration and change can occur. Without this secure foundation, individuals and couples often find themselves stuck in patterns of blame, withdrawal, or defensiveness. EFT helps them develop the capacity not just to talk about emotion, but to feel their emotions in real time, recognize what those feelings mean, and respond to them in ways that foster growth rather than distance.
Emotionally Focused Therapy is also deeply relational in nature. It was originally conceptualized to strengthen emotional bonds between partners, helping couples move from distress and disconnection to recovery and closeness. Over decades of research and clinical practice, it has been adapted successfully for individual therapy, couples therapy, and family systems, always with the same core assumption — that secure connections are fundamental to wellbeing
In Emotionally Focused Therapy the process unfolds in a structured yet fluid narrative, often described in three primary phases that mirror the emotional movement of the clients:
The first phase involves identifying and de-escalating the patterns that keep people stuck. Couples may show up repeatedly arguing about the same things, or an individual might find their emotional life dominated by avoidance or overwhelm. By naming these cycles and recognizing what people are really feeling beneath the behaviors, EFT therapists help clients slow the pattern down and see it for what it truly is — an emotional dance shaped by fear, hurt, or unmet needs.
Once the old cycle has been seen clearly and compassionately, the second phase opens space for new emotional experiences. In this stage, clients learn not only to express their vulnerabilities but also to listen and respond to the emotional truths of others. For couples, this means becoming available to one another in ways that build trust rather than feeding anxiety or withdrawal. For individuals and families, it means learning to approach previously unbearable emotions with curiosity and care rather than avoidance or judgment.
The final phase — consolidation — supports clients in integrating what they’ve learned so that new patterns take root beyond the therapy room. This is where the shifts become lasting: people see how their emotional responses can guide healthier choices, how secure bonds feel different than old patterns of disconnection, and how new ways of being with oneself and with others can become the default over time.
Emotionally Focused Therapy has helped countless individuals and couples move from isolation and reactivity to intimacy and resilience. Originally designed for couples struggling with conflict, emotional distance, or ruptures in connection, EFT’s application has expanded as clinicians have seen its profound impact in many domains of life. It can help individuals processing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, or life transitions by fostering a deeper connection with one’s own emotional world. Families also benefit when underlying emotional patterns disrupt communication and harmony.
Many people come to EFT after trying other forms of therapy or communication coaching that didn’t produce the changes they longed for. What distinguishes EFT is its ability to go beyond surface behavior and skill building to the emotional core of what keeps people stuck. When emotional patterns are met with empathy and insight instead of avoidance, clients often experience relief and understanding they didn’t think was possible.
EFT is not simply supportive or cathartic — its outcomes are measurable and well documented in clinical research. Long-term follow-up studies show that the positive changes achieved through EFT endure well beyond the end of therapy, with many couples and individuals reporting greater emotional awareness, improved communication, deeper connection, and reduced distress years later. This sustained shift is rooted in the experiential nature of the work: emotion, when understood and processed rather than avoided, becomes a source of clarity and healing.
Therapists trained in EFT don’t just listen — they actively guide clients through emotional engagement and transformation. They help clients recognize the emotional drivers of conflict or withdrawal, learn to speak from a vulnerable place, and respond to one another with empathy and support. In doing so, EFT moves people from patterns of fear and protection to patterns of secure attachment and trust.

I am blown away! I don’t write testimonials, unless I have been extremely moved by something. I was blessed to work with Brooke on a single session, and before this I was in therapy on and off with multiple therapists for the last 20 years of my life. Brooke was able to do more in one session than many years of work with my previous therapist. She has the true gift of great insight and compassion while also getting straight to the heart of your blind spots and unconscious issues in a way that has truly changed my life.

There are people who are good at their work there are people like Brooke: who are born to do it. I cannot recommend Brooke more highly. I can only imagine where I would be today if I had started working with her years ago. From the beginning of our session, she knew exactly what tools and questions that would work for my particular psychology and my personal experience. No other therapist has been able to do that or anything close.
What I also really appreciate from our session is Brooke's ability to go directly to the source of the issue while also keeping a very gentle and kind energy with me. I felt very seen, understood, and supported. Everything and more that I could have ever asked for from a therapist. I have a severe trauma history and complex issues she was able to immediately identify and help. If she could help me, I know she can help you too.

You did more in 45 minutes than my last therapist did in a year.

With your help, I've finally started to understand that while my vivid imagination often wants to create terrifying monsters under the bed, in a lot of cases those monsters are nothing more than a heap of decidedly less-terrifying laundry I've avoided for too long that just needs to be aired out and put away. Which is definitely a lot easier than monster slaying. Thank you for shedding light in the dark places I was too afraid to face alone.

I am extremely fortunate to work with Sydney, who is helping me create real internal change. The talent to listen well is Hall of Fame stuff, and she has that. She then follows with questions, strategies that are organic to the moment. I have come to believe that deep, radical, if occasionally deeply painful change ... and, then, healing can happen. I'm just at the lip of that last part - but would not have gotten there, AT ALL, without Sydney

The best therapist ever! Life-changing 🙂

Right now, the work is changing my life, sometimes in inches, sometimes in miles.
