One of the biggest challenges in self-transformation is something that often goes unnoticed: not all problems are created equal.

In a world where self-help gurus sell us on one-size-fits-all magic bullets, the truth is that different problems call for unique solutions. Some of us are grappling with the deep wounds of a troubled childhood, while others are struggling with neurotransmitters that have gone off course.

For many, self-limiting core beliefs are the root of their mental health issues, while others find that neurochemical, biological, or gut health imbalances trigger anxiety and depression.

And then, there are the unlucky few—myself included—who get hit from multiple angles (all of the above), leaving us feeling overwhelmed, even questioning our sanity as we try to untangle the mess.

The Winding Journey of Mental Health

Understanding our mental health is rarely straightforward or linear. It’s a complex, winding  journey, and knowing where to start or how to get the right help can feel confusing and aimless.

One of the most damaging biases in many approaches to self-transformation is the oversimplified idea that problematic thinking is at the heart of all our difficulties. While this might be true for some, it’s not that simple for everyone.

The Danger of Oversimplifying Mental Health

When we approach our problems with unconscious assumptions that overemphasize thinking as the culprit, we risk finding that the cure is worse than the disease.

For instance, if your mental health challenges are rooted in a physiological issue, delving deep into psychological exploration might be a red herring. You could spend years examining every angle of your thoughts and emotions, only to discover that the real issue lies in your gut health or neurochemistry.

On the other hand, if you jump to the conclusion that your problems are purely physiological without exploring the psychological or spiritual dimensions, you might end up with a prescription drug addiction that numbs you and pulls you further from your true self.

Finding the Right Path to Transformation

The hardest part of self-transformation is accurately identifying what’s really going on at the root so that you can know where and how to intervene.

In reality, most of us face a combination of factors, tangled in a complex feedback loop that requires a delicate, multi-modal approach to unravel.

Meditation is often seen as a universal cure, but for conditions like OCD, bipolar disorder, or severe trauma, it may be ineffective—or even harmful.

When meditation doesn’t work, it’s easy to blame yourself: “Am I doing this wrong? Why can’t I get better?” But sometimes, you need a foundation of stability—psychological or physiological—before certain tools can help.

This isn’t a failure; it’s a sign that a different approach is needed.
