Individual Therapy

To be human is to be beautifully flawed.

— Eric Wilson

We are all walking—and sometimes stumbling—through this life in order to make mistakes, learn, and grow.

While most people possess the innate abilities to work out these inner struggles on their own, we often need guidance to gain access to our inner knowing and self-healing capacity.

And we are here to offer this guidance to reconnect, heal, and transform.

Also known as talk therapy, individual therapy involves working with a trained therapist to resolve personal issues and become the best version of yourself.

This format usually consists of a 50-minute session, once per week, in which you sit across from your therapist and discuss the nature of your issues.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, which means your selected therapist will work to devise a plan based on your unique needs.

If necessary, there are more specialized forms of therapy that may be better suited for you.

For example, if you’re battling addiction, CBT—also known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy—may be the best route for you to take.

Hint: CBT involves retraining your brain to let go of harmful thinking patterns.

Our therapists at My LA Therapy also implement corrective emotional experience, which essentially exposes you to emotional situations which you may have struggled with in the past.

Going through the event again—under more controlled circumstances—will help you move past the trauma.

This concept proves that “intellectual knowledge” isn’t always enough to create profound change.

Corrective Emotional Experiences

Corrective emotional experiences occur throughout the entire course of therapy, when you receive a reaction from your therapist that differs from your parent/caregiver.

Additionally, it surfaces outside of session, when your change in behavior (thanks to the work done in therapy, of course) elicits novel reactions from those around you.

That’s the sweet spot where true growth comes in.

Another tool that therapists utilize in session is known as transference.

Transference is when you project your feelings about someone on someone else.

For instance, you may transfer your anger, sadness, adoration, etc. that you have for someone onto your therapist.

Although this may seem like a potential hindrance to your development, transference can actually clue your therapists in on the roots of your intense emotions.

How do you choose the right therapist?

Well, we liken it to dating—although a lot less stressful and free of judgement.

The best way to find a therapist that fits your needs and personality is by scheduling an initial consultation.

You will get a good sense of their technique, and they will offer you a detailed plan that takes your individual needs and goals into consideration.

We have an extensive roster of incredible therapists that are experienced, approachable and ready to meet you wherever you are on your journey.

If you’re wondering what the benefits are to therapy, well we’ve probably got a list long enough to fill up a novel.

But, we’ll stick to the big picture points for now:

Improved Communication Skills

The act of communicating can actually improve your communication skills.

Go figure!

But seriously, getting into the practice of connecting with your true feelings, wants, and needs with your therapist will eventually translate into life outside of session.

Like with anything, practice makes perfect.

Communication places a key role in all areas of life, from your career to relationships.

It’s the foundation to living a fully functioning and rewarding life.

And surprisingly enough, most people lack this elemental skill!

Thankfully, therapy is here to change that.

Better Coping Strategies

Life has its ups and downs, and having the right coping strategies to deal with the low points will make all the difference.

This can show up as a death in the family, losing a job, or accepting your sexuality.

But sometimes it’s not even tangible events in the here or now that we have to address.

Sometimes it’s much deeper trauma that is taking up real estate in our subconscious and affecting our everyday actions.

If you are living with internalized childhood trauma for example, you might turn to substances like drugs or alcohol or unhealthy behaviors, like gambling or excessive sex to heal your pain.

We have specialized modalities to provide you with the right tools so you can handle whatever life throws at you—with grace.

Healthier Choices

First off, therapy will help you identify the unhealthy behaviors that you’ve become accustomed to.

It will also help you consider healthier alternatives that are more in line with what you want in life.

Once you start making choices that better serve you, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you can accomplish.

And you won’t want to stop.

That’s not to say you won’t experience slip-ups or setbacks every once in a while.

That’s totally normal.

But overall, you will feel empowered to make decisions that set you in the right direction.

Research-based, personalized therapy.

At My LA Therapy, our warm and experienced therapists specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, & relationships.

More Fulfilling Relationships

Whether you’re struggling with family relationships or your love life, therapy can lead to greater satisfaction in the relationship department.

Family and couples’ therapy is a great route to take for a more specialized approach.

But, even general talk therapy will naturally improve your relationships because you will be bringing your best version of yourself to the people in your life.

When you are more confident and clear with your boundaries, healthy relationships will naturally follow.

Improved Self-Esteem

Therapy will allow you to gain confidence in many ways.

Sometimes just bringing the issues to the surface and understanding where they come from can clear them up.

That’s because you will start to realize that a lot of your harmful thoughts and behaviors are not your fault.

Learning to set boundaries will also boost your confidence because you will begin to realize that you have a lot more control over your life than you initially thought.

And this is a positive reinforcement cycle.

The more you establish boundaries and lay down your wants and needs, the more positive events will follow.

The more positive events that occur, the more confident you will feel to keep the momentum going.

And so on and so forth.

Achieving Life Goals

Therapy is often the fire you need to get you moving on achieving your life goals, whether that be finding the right partner, starting a fitness routine, or landing your dream job!

Oftentimes we feel stuck, unmotivated or afraid to go after what we really want due to past trauma, fear, low self-esteem, or even issues focusing.

Therapy will get to the root of these blocks so you can start accomplishing what you really want in life.

Although generalized talk therapy will target these issues, we also offer dedicated therapy modalities for people who are feeling stuck in their careers, especially those in the creative fields!

A Sounding Board

If anything, therapy provides you with a safe space to explore your feelings without judgement.

And our trained therapists are there to listen, support, and encourage you to be the best version of yourself.

Sometimes you don’t want to talk about your inner struggles with family and friends.

And that’s ok.

That’s why we are here, to meet you wherever you are on your journey and support you every step of the way.
