About Paula

My personal and career focus is to help others by providing tools to create the life they desire, empowering and inspiring people to reach their dreams and to develop the confidence to achieve their goals. I have done this in the role of therapist, special needs teacher and international humanitarian. I see the strengths in everyone I encounter, and will help you develop your own inner strength to cope more effectively with your challenges, whether they are due to mental health or substance abuse, relationship and career choices, or finding meaning and purpose in life.

Through a therapeutic relationship, old wounds can be healed, healthier coping skills can be learned, and inner peace and self- acceptance can be reached. I believe in the transformative power of therapy, and will collaborate with you to accomplish your desired growth and change. “Talk therapy” is oriented toward insight, self-understanding, growth and change.

How I Work

My style includes use of psycho-educational materials and I take an active approach to problem solving, learning coping skills, and understanding your symptoms. I often assign follow up tasks or “homework” between sessions. I encourage my client’s to take an active role in their own learning and growth, and often this shortens the time needed in therapy. Although supportive listening is one part of the therapeutic process, I am engaged by giving feedback and recommendations. I also use cognitive behavior therapy techniques to help the client perceive and interpret themselves and their situation in a different way, by changing the thoughts, the feelings and resulting behaviors often change.

In my spare time, I enjoy all that LA has to offer: the beach, biking, and being active. I have an adult daughter, who has blessed me with an adorable 2 year old grandson. I enjoy doing international volunteer work, such as Habitat for Humanity, and have begun working with Refugee Alliance for Health, going to the border to work with traumatized children waiting for asylum. After teaching in four different countries, including Kenya, I chose to settle back in Los Angeles.

Paula was regarded as one of the best therapists in Indianapolis for children and families and was highly sought after for her professional guidance. Having the pleasure of getting to know her personally as well as her dedication to her work, I can honestly say it was Indiana’s loss when she moved to California.

My brother is a 38 yr old veteran, who struggles with addiction to opiates and meth and bipolar disorder. He he has been in and out of detox, rehab, the psychiatric unit and on the streets. Paula's guidance on the phone has helped me know when to reach out and when to let go. She has had my brother's back, providing wisdom and skill in navigating a very difficult time for both of us. She's an excellent clinician, kind dedicated and supportive, and offers great expertise and over 30 years of experience.
