About Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Premenstrual syndrome, also abbreviated as PMS, is very common before females get their period. But, when PMS symptoms are accompanied by feelings of severe depression or tension, it’s time to get help. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, also abbreviated as PMDD, is a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome. It is usually accompanied by depression and anxiety. PMDD can be so severe that it can affect one’s relationships, daily life activities, and performance at work.

PMDD symptoms typically start one to two weeks before your period starts, and can last until the second or third day of your period. PMDD’s cause is undetermined, but there are some possible explanations as to why it happens, including a deficiency in serotonin, which in turn affects your mood and can cause other symptoms. There are some forms of therapy practiced here that can help with your symptoms, though. Talk to one of our therapists to discuss implementing changes in your diet and lifestyle, and working on techniques to manage your stress, to relieve some symptoms of PMDD.

PMDD Symptoms

Many symptoms of PMDD are similar to symptoms of PMS, including:

  • mood swings
  • frequent crying
  • cramps
  • feeling bloated

However, there are other symptoms of PMDD that distinguish it from PMS, and these symptoms include:

  • severe feelings of depression
  • heightened feelings of irritability
  • severe feelings of anxiousness or nervousness
  • feelings of tension
  • loss of interest in relationships and daily activities
  • a hard time concentrating or thinking
  • feelings of fatigue, or having a lack of energy
  • feeling as if you’re not in control
  • binge eating or changes in appetite
  • extremely painful menstruation cycles

Please keep in mind that a trained professional is qualified to diagnose this disorder. If you are having symptoms, you should contact a therapist as soon as possible.

**Please call 911 immediately if you are having thoughts of harming yourself in any way.**
