Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Eckhart Tolle was right when he said we are addicted to our thoughts.

Many of us don’t know how to quiet our minds and listen to ourselves.

We’ve internalized the notion that everything– even emotions– can be fixed and figured out, as though they are some kind of math problem.

While we often may recognize there is a tug of war going on between our heads and our hearts, we still so often believe the answer is to try to solve our emotional problems rationally.

As you may already know, this doesn’t work.

The head can’t solve the problems of the heart.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that integrates mindfulness as a central part of its practice in order to better bridge the gap between our feelings and our thoughts.

Mindfulness, simply put, is non-judgmental awareness.

With practice, mindfulness can help you decrease stress and dysfunctional thinking and increase feelings of peace and balance.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy integrates Cognitive Therapy interventions that target and transform irrational thoughts and assumptions with mindful practices such as breathing exercises and meditation.

Mindful practices have been passed down in Eastern traditions for centuries.

Now, contemporary research findings in Neuroscience and Psychology are proving empirically that these healing practices are effective in ameliorating psychological problems.

That’s how the technique of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy was developed.

In MBCT, our therapists will pay attention to the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma and help you heal the way you think and relate to them.

We can’t change our past but we can change the way we relate to it.

We can’t always change our circumstances, but we can change our experience of our circumstances by changing our perspectives.

Through MBCT, we can learn to be non-reactive and find peace, regardless of what is going on in our lives.

How MBCT Works

Our work together will bring you out of your head and into your heart—that is, into your intuition.

Our intuition is like a compass that guides us and helps us navigate the waters of our lives.

When we take a strictly rational approach to the world it cuts us off from this invaluable navigational tool.

The deductive approach to life is almost universal in our culture, but it ignores a huge chunk of rich human experience—arguably, some of the most important aspects of life.

The worst part is that this form of thinking is so commonplace that it is invisible to most of us.

We don’t see the perils in our system of thinking so we assume it must be that we are broken or there’s something wrong with us.

Together, we will begin to learn to regulate anxiety and depression through bringing awareness to the body.

We will work with breathing techniques and other relaxation tools to help you alleviate your building stress and tension.

We will begin to release the blockages that have been preventing you from feeling present, connected, and alive.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy will allow you to better understand mental states and conditions, understand what makes you personally vulnerable to negative mood states and downward spirals, and what causes you to get stuck.

It will also help you see the negative mood states that you may be subjecting yourself to that are causing these negative mood spirals.

Benefits of Mindfulness

    • Mindfulness can help you bring greater awareness to your own thought and mood patterns.
    • Mindfulness can help you learn how to be present and appreciate the small pleasures of everyday life.
    • Mindfulness can teach you how to stop the downward spiral that can emerge from a bad mood or thinking about painful memories.
    • Mindfulness can allow you to “shift gears” from your present state of mind to one that is more aware, more balanced, and less judgmental.
Mindfulness can give you access to another approach for dealing with difficult emotions and moods.

Through a mindfulness-based approach to therapy, we will begin to gradually draw you into a different kind of existence, a way of being in which you are more present and aware of your experience, rather than addicted to your thoughts, attachments, and illusory sense of control.

As the former system melts away, you will begin to embody a more authentic, alive, and peaceful self.

At My LA Therapy, our Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapists use the latest research and methods in order to help you reach your highest potential.

Therapy can successfully improve your life by helping you minimize your anxiety, identifying and changing underlying thought and behavioral patterns that contribute to your struggles, and providing you with strategies to decrease discomfort while restoring an overall sense of peace.
