About Holotropic Breathwork
Holotropic breathwork is a therapeutic breathing technique used to assist one with emotional coping and personal growth. Holotropic Breathwork was established in the 1970s by Husband and wife Dr. Stan Grof and Christina Grof. The goal is to bring about improvements in every aspect of your life be it psychological, spiritual, and or physical well-being.
What to expect during a holotropic breathwork session? Usually you will be guided and lead by a certified group practitioner (private sessions are available as well) through controlled breathing. You’ll be guided to breathe rapidly for a set amount of time in order to bring about altered states of consciousness. This will be done lying down.
Music is an important part of this experience. The beat of the music and the rhythm plus words help you to reach other levels of consciousness. Meditative art and discussion is part of the therapy. Afterwards, you might be guided to draw an image and share your experience.
How does Holotropic Breathwork work on a Biological and Scientific Level?
Holotropic breathwork hypo-oxygenates the cells. Because the blood stream is flooded with more oxygen than you normally take in at a very rapid rate, it causes a rapid healing to take place in the body, mind, and spirit simultaneously.
It’s thought that the practice allows you to move beyond your body and ego to get in touch with your true self and spirit. It allows you to better connect with others and the natural world. Holotropic breathing may be used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Migraine headaches
- Chronic pain
- Avoidance behaviors
- Premenstrual tension
Some people have also used the technique to get rid of negative thoughts, including the fear of death and other fear when there is an intention out behind it. They’ve also used it to help manage trauma. The practice helps some people to find new purpose and direction in their lives. This entire process is meant to activate your natural capacity for healing.
