ABOUT EDUCATIONAL CONSULTING
Is your child’s school a good fit for his learning and social emotional needs? Parents have some choices when it comes to helping their child get the best education. There are usually several options to enhance their current school experience or make a change. These can be discussed with you educational consultant.
If your child or teen is unhappy or frequently stressed at school, it is important to assess the underlying problem and possible solutions. The causes for underachievement, anxiety and distress about school may be due to:
- Learning disabilities – there might be one that has not been diagnosed or properly remediated. They may struggle with reading, writing, and/or math. This needs to be diagnosed and taught with modifications and/or tutoring to meet their specific needs.
- Attention deficit disorder (ADD) or ADHD – there are many myths or misconceptions about these “disorders” including whether they are being over diagnosed. ADHD can negatively effect achievement, learning, and also cause behavioral problems. ADHD is not a disorder or motivation, it is neurologically and developmentally based and responds well to treatment.
- Bullying – each school has a unique social cultures, and some children are not a good “fit”, because they are different than the “norm.” Being bullied or feeling like “I don’t belong,” can cause emotional problems including depression, anxiety and poor self-esteem. Therapy can help the child learn to cope with the stressors and help parents assess if a change of school is an option.
- “On the spectrum” – these students have a mild form of autism, which includes difficulty with social communication which makes peer relationships difficult. Parental consultation can assess the possible benefits of changing schools, tutoring, counseling or assessing for potential special education services.
