Deaf and Hard of Hearing
About Deaf and Hard of Hearing Therapy
As a graduate of Gallaudet University, I am a multiculturally competent clinical counselor with the ability to work with Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. I am skilled in providing culturally and linguistically affirmative services to Deaf individuals and their families through the use of American Sign Language (ASL), signed English, and spoken English. I make sure to match my clients’ communication needs and preferences as I take into consideration how Deaf clients’ lives are shaped by their identity and experiences as a member of their cultural and linguistic background. I am mindful of the counseling relationship, as I am a hearing therapist, and want to ensure my clients’ comfort regarding our identity differences. My goal is to make therapy accessible to your cultural and communication needs as we work together to determine the best possible road to emotional and psychological well-being.
My areas of specialization include:
- Mental and emotional issues
- Deaf individuals of hearing parents
- Hearing individuals of Deaf parents
- Family communication differences
- Deaf identity
- Recipients of Cochlear Implants
- Pre-lingual and late-onset hearing loss
I see counseling as a collaborative relationship that moves individuals along the path to empowerment and self-awareness. I am deeply committed to helping clients focus on their goals and build on existing strengths to cope with life’s challenges in a safe, open, and non-judgmental environment. I consider myself to be an eclectic and integrative therapist and tailor my style to the needs of each client, focusing on meeting each individual on where they are in their journey. My practice focuses on a holistic approach to treatment emphasizing the importance of the mind-body relationship and the overall effects that thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and our environment have on our life experiences. My work supports individuals in developing a deeper understanding and connection with themselves, stronger more fulfilling relationships with others, and overall life balance and satisfaction strengthened by positive mental and emotional health.
