About American Sign Language (ASL)
American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language of many who are deaf and hard of hearing, but is used by many hearing people as well. It is a complete and natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from spoken English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face.
Gallaudet University is the only known university providing specific education and training to individuals interested in working with the deaf and hear of hearing community. As a graduate of this university, I’ve become a multiculturally competent clinical counselor with the ability to work with Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. Thus, I am skilled in providing culturally and linguistically affirmative services to Deaf individuals and their families through the use of ASL, signed English, and spoken English.
I make sure to match my clients’ communication needs and preferences by taking into consideration how Deaf clients’ lives are shaped by their identity and experiences as a member of their cultural and linguistic background. As a hearing therapist, mindfulness of the counseling relationship and ensuring clients’ comfort regarding our identity differences is important. My goal is to make therapy accessible to your cultural and communication needs as we work together to determine the best possible road to emotional and psychological well-being.
