Motivational Interviewing: Stages of Changes

The stages of change model defines the six stages of change as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. 

People in the precontemplation stage may believe that they don’t need to change, have reluctance to accept that they aren’t where they want to be, and may be uncomfortable with the idea of taking a chance or making a change. 

This stage is the hardest to get out of, but everything else gets easier in comparison once you’ve grown out of this phase. 

In the contemplation stage, you might question whether you need to change, while still weighing the pros and cons of the change, and eventually choosing how to move forward constructively. 

While it may sometimes seem easier to keep the status quo, MI can help you keep moving forward towards your ideal self. 

In the preparation stage, there is a willingness to change, but there may be procrastination or laziness to start the change.

It’s important to seek therapy during this time to start the change that you want. 

In the action stage, you are finally changing and showing visible progress. 

There may be periodic setbacks or slips, but there is an overall positive trend. 

Finally, in the maintenance stage, there has been a positive change and in this stage we emphasize the commitment to maintaining the growth and changes made. 

In the maintenance stage, the challenge is how to navigate negative circumstances that may threaten to take you back to your previous ways.
