If you’ve ever been in a slump or had trouble bringing yourself to achieve your goals—(haven’t we all)—then you’re in the right place.

Thanks to a useful technique called Motivational Interviewing, we can actually help you make deep and lasting changes to your life.

Motivational Interviewing, also known as MI, is a research-proven technique effective in treating addiction and making changes in your life.

It’s especially supportive when you’re experiencing a level of ambivalence about changing.

When you’re not sure if you want to change or how you want to change, Motivational Interviewing can effectively help you clarify what you want and achieve it.

While Motivational Interviewing is often used to treat addiction, it can be used for other aspirations and goals as well.

Maybe there’s a habit or a relationship where part of you wants to make a change but another part of you doesn’t, or maybe you want to take steps to improve an area of your life but aren’t quite sure where to start.

Sound relatable?

At its heart, MI helps you work through your ambivalence, explore elements of commitment, and find motivation that comes from self-directed origins.

Clinical research shows that clients who are confident they can achieve change, can actually do so!

Carl Rogers discovered the foundation of Motivational Interviewing is humanism, and claimed that in order for a person to change and improve, they need a positive environment that enables communication and self-growth, along with feeling understood and being listened to.

At its core, Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative process between the therapist and the client.

Motivational Interviewing: Stages of Changes

The stages of change model defines the six stages of change as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.

People in the precontemplation stage may believe that they don’t need to change, have reluctance to accept that they aren’t where they want to be, and may be uncomfortable with the idea of taking a chance or making a change.

This stage is the hardest to get out of, but everything else gets easier in comparison once you’ve grown out of this phase.

In the contemplation stage, you might question whether you need to change, while still weighing the pros and cons of the change, and eventually choosing how to move forward constructively.

While it may sometimes seem easier to keep the status quo, MI can help you keep moving forward towards your ideal self.

In the preparation stage, there is a willingness to change, but there may be procrastination or laziness to start the change.

It’s important to seek therapy during this time to start the change that you want.

In the action stage, you are finally changing and showing visible progress.

There may be periodic setbacks or slips, but there is an overall positive trend.

Finally, in the maintenance stage, there has been a positive change and in this stage we emphasize the commitment to maintaining the growth and changes made.

In the maintenance stage, the challenge is how to navigate negative circumstances that may threaten to take you back to your previous ways.

Motivational Interviewing is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.
